Becโ€™s Story - putting her diabetes in remission

Curves Ilkeston gym member Bec celebrates with Coach Sall that she has successfully put her diabetes in remission

Meet Bec โ€“ Bec joined us in May 2021 and she recently got the news that her DIABETES IS IN REMISSION, and she has reduced her cholesterol!!!

Bec shared her story with us last year as part of our ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ Strengthening Women ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ challenge. Here it is...

โ€œMy marriage of 24 years ended in Nov 2019 for a while I lived in my home alone. This was when I started to comfort eat put a lot of weight on. In June 2020 I moved in with my parents and went up to quite a large size.

In May 2021 attend my GP and had some blood tests. These picked up that I had developed Type 2 Diabetes. I made a further appointment and was told that I needed to change my diet and get some exercise.

I was quite shocked about this diagnosis, so I decided to do something about it! I tried to change my diet and lost quite a bit a weight but still needed to do some sort of exercise.

For a few months I tried kick boxing but quickly decided that is wasnโ€™t for me as I felt silly and uncomfortable. Then I was left looking around for something else. I remembered that my friend a while ago had been to Curves in Ilkeston and said how brilliant they had been. I had look and the website and thought why not give it a try?

I must admit I was very nervous on the day of my first appointment and had to force myself forward to walk in, but then thought what the hell. I made up my mind to walk in and try and be and look confident.

As soon as I entered, I was greeted by the lovely staff who straight away made me feel welcome and at ease. I was so surprised that there were women of all ages and sizes there. To be honest I was expecting to be surrounded by loads of skinny women in their designer outfits. This wasnโ€™t the case at all!

At my first appointment I was asked what my goals where. I said that I was going to a wedding at the end of October and wanted to lose weight and look good for that.  My ex would be attending and I wanted to say โ€˜Ha look at me! This is what I can do without you!โ€™.  I also needed to try and reverse my diabetes. I must say when I left Curves on that day, I have never felt so motivated to change something about myself in my life!

Since then, I have lost nearly 2 stone and have really toned up. By the day of the wedding, I was a in a dress that was 2 sizes smaller than what I was on the day of first appointment. Iโ€™d lost nearly 2 stone and My GP told me that my blood sugars were stable and are now in the Pre-Diabetes range.

I must admit that sometimes it is a hard struggle to remain motivated. This was especially after the wedding. I wasnโ€™t able go to the Gym for nearly 6 weeks in January 2022 because of an operation I had on my hand.

I had lost motivation a little recently but keep plugging away with great support of the Curves staff.

I must admit that in the last 2 years my confidence has soared and have done things that I would never have done while in my marriage. I have been away for several weekends by myself in the UK and in July last I went solo on holiday abroad to Cyprus.
