I have enjoyed an almost lifelong love affair with health and fitness and I am often asked “how do you stay so slim? How do you have so much energy?” The answer was always simple (I thought); eat well and Strength Training.

When I discovered Curves, I’d been working in a conventional gym as a sports’ injuries therapist. I was always telling my clients that Strength Training would improve their recovery and reduce their risk of injury.

I mostly trained in the gym by myself, and any other women were on the bikes or the treadmills.

When I first walked into Curves (to scope it out prior to a job interview!) I could not believe what I saw – 7 women, ALL Strength Training. I knew this was the place for me. In fact, I liked Curves so much I decided to buy one and so began the life change that brought me to Ilkeston, and changed almost everything I thought I knew about women!

I wanted to be involved with Curves because it’s the REAL answer to health, fitness and weight loss questions. It’s based in science and presented in a way that removes the barriers. In fact, I was very cross for several days that, not only had I not thought of it, but a man had! I wanted to everyone to know and experience what I had my whole life and here was the way.

As I got more involved in Curves I realised the wider impact that Strengthening women has. Strong women, make Strong families and Strong families make Strong Communities. If you want to change the world mobilise the women of your community. I am a game changer and I wanted to make a difference, one woman at a time, fulfilling her dreams.

Curves is also the place I get to be REAL, I can be my true self, live my passion, take my own advice and have licence to build a team of Coaches my way. I can share my expertise and gather information and experiences from others that I can share to help more people.

In the last 14 years I have learned what it is REALLY like for women who struggle with their weight. I have learned how important good mental health is for weight loss.

I have come to understand the REALITY is that while the majority of women easily see the good in others and love nothing more than celebrating others small achievements, they struggle with their own sense of worth. They’ll diminish their own achievements and are undermined by perfectionist tendencies and conditioning that holds them back from trying and puts them in fear of making mistakes.

That same conditioning fills them with anxiety and self-doubt, making them unable to priorities their health properly and act on what they know is best for them, and makes unable to see their qualities and their successes. I have learned about the REAL damage that diet culture has done to our minds, our eating habits and our habits.

And I have learned that women love widely, generously and unconditionally (through all the challenges that life throws… at them or others). I have been privileged to turn around in many a storm (and one global pandemic), and find all of you still there, supporting me, each other, and this little gym for all the women in the present and the future.

Most of you know I am hoping to retire my Curves career soon. I cannot do this forever, having learned all this I need to reach further and help more women in different ways. But it will be a wrench. I am reassured we will find the best replacement for me and that they will continue what we have got here.

Every day, every time a member walks through the door I am proud. Every small achievement inspires me to continue to share the answer to our health and fitness and weight loss challenges. That is, Strength Training at Curves.
