Consequences Matter

OK, that might be stating the obvious and feel a bit negative (consequences are defined as unwelcome or unpleasant). This is a weekly email of encouragement after all.

So, stay with me here, because this is really worth some thought over the weekend, and this is NOT about your Easter chocolate or whether you missed a workout to spend some QT with your nearest and dearest.

This is about all the everyday decisions we make…

Fact 1 – consequences are not always black and white. You were not “bad” because you ate some (or even a lot) of Easter chocolate. This is not a disaster in itself. We have been conditioned to overthink our actions until we believe that the chocolate lands straight on the scales. Not true. But thinking it will blow your mindset and sabotage your intentions for the next hour/day/week/month/year.

Fact 2 – some consequences are direct, and some are far reaching. If you step in front of a car, you will likely end up hurt. If you eat come Easter chocolate, you will enjoy a moment of pleasure. If you swerve one workout you may feel some regret. Serve multiple workouts and the consequences stack up as you lose momentum, fitness and it changes how you see and feel about yourself.

Fact 3 – it’s easier to keep doing a thing than to start a thing. Your actions today keep you on your path (with your Easter chocolate in hand) and not on a “slippery slope” that ends up making you care less about the consequences.

Fact 4 – some consequences are possible, and some are guaranteed. Weight loss or weight gain are never guaranteed, either can happen and it doesn’t happen as we’ve conditioned to believe. The impact of missing workouts on your fitness and mindset are guaranteed.

Fact 5 – your reaction to a consequence (possible or guaranteed) and how you feel about it are as important as the consequence itself.

If you only get one thing from this email today it’s this – eating Easter chocolate (or anything else) is OK, swerving your next 3 weeks of workouts because of how you feel about the chocolate (or anything else) is not.

Consequences matter – and probably not in the way you have been led to believe!

Coach Dannii and I get deeper into this in our podcast episode of the same name. It’s a really good listen because you can hear in our voices as we really start to appreciate just how important this is!
